Power Window Switches

The main functions of the master power window switch are four-door glass manual/automatic one-button lift, four-door glass locking, and electric adjustment of exterior mirrors, etc. The master power window switch in power window system is generally transmitted through the LIN bus, and the switch trigger signal is sent to the body controller (BCM), and then the BCM sends the signal to the four-door glass motor or other actuators to realize the corresponding function. In addition, due to the automatic one-key lifting of the glass, in order to prevent accidental occurrence of items or human beings being clamped due to false triggering, switch with automatic one-key lifting configuration generally need to be equipped an anti-pinch function, and the realization of the anti-pinch function is generally realized by the ripple anti-clamping of the glass lift motor.

Symptoms of a Bad or Failing Power Window Switch

1. All the windows quit working

If all of the windows quit working at once, meaning there is no response when you push the power window switch, chances are there is a loss of power in the electrical system. Normally, a bad relay or blown fuse is the cause of this problem. The drivers master switch may also be the cause.

2. Only one window stops working

If only one window stops working, the problem could be a bad relay, fuse issue, bad motor, or the power window switch has failed. The most common reason for one window to stop working is the switch, so this should be looked at by a professional mechanic to have your power window switch replaced. Once the mechanics replace the switch, they will test the windows to make sure the rest of the system is working properly.

3. Window works from master switch only

In some cases the window may not work from its own switch, but the master switch can still put the window up or down. In this case there is a good chance that the power window switch has failed and that the other window components are working properly.

4. Windows work sometimes

When you open a window fine, but it doesn’t seem to close properly, this could be a window power switch issue. The opposite could be true as well, the window would close fine, but does not open like normal. The switch could be dying, but has not fully gone out yet. There is still time to replace the power window switch before your window gets stuck open or closed. Have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible because in case of an emergency situation, you may need to open and close your windows fast.

If your windows are not working properly, or are not working at all, have a mechanic inspect and/or fix the window switch. It is important to have properly working windows in case of an emergency situation so these issues should be addressed promptly. YourMechanic makes getting repairs to your power window switch easy by coming to your home or office to diagnose or fix issues. You can book a service online 24/7.
